You Read to Me, I'll Read to You by Mary Ann Hoberman is an exciting combination of eight fragmented fairy tales. Hoberman does a good job of adding her own twist to each traditional story, while taking no more than four pages to do it! The book- which in many senses is also a poetry book due to Hoberman's choice to tell the stories in the form of poetry- ends each tale with "you read to me, Ill read to you". The author starts the book with the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and consists of dialogue between Goldilocks baby bear. Next, Hoberman puts a twist on The Princess and the Pea- this tale is told through dialogue between the two, and as in every other story in the book ends with them reading their original story to one another. Next is a twist on yet another familiar fairy tale- Jack and the Bean Stock. In this time, Hoberman tells the story through a conversation between Jack and the Ogre, which transforms from an argument to an agreement. It finishes with the characters writing of their story. Little Red Riding Hood also made the list of fairy tales, and is narrated by Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. Cinderella, which is told through the words of Cinderella and her step sisters, is the next story that Hoberman tackles, and it is followed by the tale of the Three Little Pigs, which is narrated by Big Bad Wolf and Little Pig. The storybook finishes up with its last two tales- The Little Red Hen and The Grain of Wheat, and The Three Billy Goats Gruff.
Throughout the book, illustrator Michael Emberley does an amazing job in complementing the stories- each illustration depicts what is currently happening in the story.
This book would work perfectly with a choral reading exercise. Each poem is color-coded, making it easy to tell which character said what. This makes it easy to assign students to the part of the text they should read, and will help them with their reading and speaking skills while avoiding the embarrassment that can result from having students read out loud individually.
