Coconut Kind of Day is a collection of island poems by Lynn Joseph. The book exposes the reader to certain aspects of the Caribbean culture, from the simple things like the sounds someone living in the Caribbean may hear, to the different kinds of fruits found in the island region. This book does an excellent job in exposing the reader to the various lingual differences that are found in Caribbean English.
The illustrations by Sandra Speidel add to the beauty of the book- her use of pastel art is truly amazing in itself.
This book would go along well with an exercise aimed at exposing students to cultures outside of those found in the classroom. Because Caribbean students are statistically less likely to be present in American classrooms, this book may be used as a tool to show them how children all over the world are similar, despite major differences such as nationality. A good exercise to use with this book is one in which students are asked to compare and contrast how the narrator of these poems may be like them, and how the narrator may differ from them. This would allow the students to relate to other cultures while still learning about what differences exist from culture to culture.
