"you are poetry"
Emily is a book about a mysterious woman living in a yellow house. Bedard narrates the story through the words of a young girl who lives with her mother and father across from this mysterious yellow house. On a winter day, the narrator's mother receives a letter from the mysterious woman (who people refer to as "the Myth") asking her to play her music in the yellow house. The narrator goes with her mother when she makes the visit to play for the myth, and once they get there, they discover that the myth, who the reader learns to be Emily, will mot be joining them- instead she will be listening from another room. Being a curious girl, the narrator explores the house, eventually finding "the Myth". Once she has found her, the narrator gives Emily the gift of spring, and Emily gives the narrator a poem to enjoy later on in the year. The book ends with an explanation that Emily is actually a story of Emily Dickinson, a famous poet who lived a rather private, uneventful life from 1830-1886.
This book would go well with a poetry exercise. Students may write poetry about their favorite seasons, which would compliment the book rather well.
