Suzanne Altman, author of My (top secret) Worst Days Diary does an excellent job of incorporating realistic aspects with the unfortunate events found in this book. The narrator- Mighty Mo Murphy is a young girl who recently moved to a new school. She is having a hard time adjusting, so she starts her "Worst Days Diary" to account for all of her worst days. The journal starts by Mo talking about her first day at a new school, and progresses to her first few days of summer and, as the reader learns, events in Mo's life quickly shift from negative and embarrassing to positive and encouraging. Mo ends the last entry by talking about her new journal- one which she will use to keep track of her best days. This text does a good job of reminding it's reader that bad things happen to everybody, and that things can always get worse. Suzanne Altman chooses to write the book in the form of a journal, making it easy to relate to, and fun to read!
This journal is even further enhanced by its illustrations. Diane Allison did a great job of creating accurate and attention-grabbing depictions of what was going on in each of the entries.
A good exercise to accompany this book in a classroom setting is an exercise which requires students to pick up where the book left off- a best days diary. Students could either choose to write about good things that happened to them, or they can make up good things that they think should happen to Mighty Mo. This would be a fun activity that would still help develop the students' writing.
