one green apple
...Moving to a new country can be difficult...
Eve Bunting does an excellent job of providing the reader with a new perspective: one of a young immigrant's first experiences in school in America. One Green Apple is a realistic-fiction book written by Eve Bunting and illustrated by Ted Lewin, in which a young immigrant, Farah, tells the reader what its like on her second day attending school in a new country. She is going on a field trip with her class to an apple orchard, and as Farah sits with her classmates, a girl named Anna introduces herself. On the way to the apple orchard, she notices ways that her classmates are like her, as well as ways that they are not. While she is talking about her field trip, the reader learns that she is not yet fluent in English, and that some things are hard for her to explain. Though she isn't familiar with some of the clothes the other kids wear, or the words that they say, she is familiar with a lot of other sounds, like the universal sound of laughter.
As part of the field trip, each student is allowed to pick one apple, and Farah notices that her classmates all have their red apples picked and ready to go. As she is about to pick her apple, she notices a shorter tree, which doesn't quite fit in with the others, and decides to pick her apple from that tree. Like Farah, the tree is different, and so are the apples growing on it! After Farah and all of her classmates have picked their apples, their teacher gathers them in a room where they all put their apples in a machine which will make apple cider. The children all work together to make the machine work, which helps Farah feel more comfortable. Once the cider is made, the Farah describes being able to taste her "special apple", and they are on the way back to school. Through his paintings, illustrator Ted Lewin does a great job of capturing key moments of the story , such as Farah picking the green apple, and her sharing a laugh with classmates Ana and Jim.
This would be the perfect literature to introduce students to the idea of multiculturalism. An exercise that would work well with this book would be an exercise in which students introduce themselves and where they are from. This would work especially well in a classroom with multiple nationalities and cultures.
